Product Description

Fresh Yacon rootsThe Yacon plant, known as Smallanthus sonchifolius grows natively in the Andes mountains of South America and has been eaten for hundreds of years by the locals for its medicinal, and therapeutic properties.

What makes the Yacon unique is it’s root, which is one of the richest dietary sources of fructooligosaccharides (FOS). These are packed with pre-biotics, which help feed good bacteria which may help reduce inflammation, and help improve metabolism.

The Yacon root is also a rich source of dietary fiber and in particular inulin which has been linked to improving glycemic indices, boosting antioxidant capacity and helping reduce body weight.

Yacon root recently hit the headlines due to promising research, and a recent appearance on the Dr Oz show where it was hailed as the next “metabolism game changer”.

Yacon XL is a natural supplement which provides a massive 500mg of pure Yacon root extract per capsule essentially providing all the benefits of Yacon syrup in a practical calorie free capsule format.

How does the Yacon Root and fructooligosaccharides work?

What sets Yacon root apart is it’s unique composition which features Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) which is a fermentable fiber rich in inulin.

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) have been linked to increases in the levels of friendly gut bacteria like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. These plays an important role in maintaining good digestion, and has been linked in studies to lower risks of diabetes, improved immunity, supporting brain function, lower inflammation and increasing their numbers may help maintain a healthy weight.

Bifidus and Lactobacillus have been found to play a role in helping inhibit cholesterol synthesis in the liver, and help enhance insulin sensitivity.

But thats not all, Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are dietary fibers which may also help with appetite control and food cravings by modulating gastrointestinal peptides.

Yacon root is not the only source of FOS, but it is the richest. As a comparison, a serving of Yacon XL (2 capsules) featuring 100% pure yacon root extract contains the equivalent in fructooligosaccharides (FOS) of over 12 Jerusalem artichokes, 535 onions, or 530 bananas!

Yacon root extract is also over one and a half times more concentrated than Yacon syrup without the added calories.

Clinical Studies: Key Findings from the Yacon root and fructooligosaccharides studies

Yacon syrup: beneficial effects on obesity and insulin resistance in humans.

The recommended daily consumption of yacon syrup with no undesirable gastrointestinal effects is 0.14 g fructooligosaccharides/kg. Daily intake of yacon syrup produced a significant decrease in body weight, waist circumference and body mass index. Additionally, decrease in fasting serum insulin and Homeostasis Model Assessment index was observed. The consumption of yacon syrup increased defecation frequency and satiety sensation. Fasting glucose and serum lipids were not affected by syrup treatment and the only positive effect was found in serum LDL-cholesterol levels.

Thirty-five out of a total of 55 women completed this study with good compliance.

This study was a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial featuring 55 obese women participants with cholesterol problems and a history of constipation.

40 women took Yacon syrup, while 15 took a placebo.

After a study period 120 days:

The Yacon syrup group had lost 33 pounds (15 kg) on average, and lost 3.9 inches (10cm) off their waist.
The placebo group gained an average of 3.5 pounds (1.6 kg), with no significant change in their waist circumference.

Body Mass Index (BMI) went from 34 to 28 (From obese to overweight).

Stool frequency increased from 0.28 per day to 0.99 per day, effectively curing them of constipation.

Fasting insulin levels went down by 42%.

Insulin resistance, a major risk factor for diabetes and heart disease, went down by 67%.

LDL (the “bad”) cholesterol went from 137 mg/dL to 97.5 mg/dL (a 29% decrease).

Dietary fructooligosaccharides and potential benefits on health.

FOS have important beneficial physiological effects such as low carcinogenicity, a prebiotic effect, improved mineral absorption and decreased levels of serum cholesterol, triacylglycerols and phospholipids.

  • 14 women lost five pounds or more
  • Average weight loss was 2.9 pounds

  • Total weight lost among all the women was 153 pounds
  • 27 (68%) recommended yacon as a weight loss tool

Effect of Yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) on Colonic Transit Time in Healthy Volunteers

Yacon markedly accelerates colonic transit in healthy individuals. Further studies are needed in constipated patients to confirm these preliminary data. Due to the low caloric content of yacon, the root could be a useful treatment in constipated diabetics or obese patients.

Gut flora in health and disease

Gut flora might also be an essential factor in certain pathological disorders, including multisystem organ failure, colon cancer, and inflammatory bowel diseases. Nevertheless, bacteria are also useful in promotion of human health. Probiotics and prebiotics are known to have a role in prevention or treatment of some diseases.

I’m only giving this a 4 star because its making me go to the loo at least 3 times a day! Other than that it seems to be working, I’m feeling fuller after meals and lost just under 2 kg since starting.

  3. Rated 5 out of 5

Good service, and a handy guide which came in the box.
