January the 1st is a powerful motivator. It’s a chance to turn a new page and start the year with a blank page. A chance to start over fresh, and to take action on our new goals for the year and to finally get started on that Yoga practice, that morning run, starting that new diet you have been talking to your friends about or simply getting more steps in your day.
But… January has come and gone, and you’re no closer to putting those new habits in place than you were last year! By the middle of the year you’ll have probably forgotten about those new resolutions and by December you’ll be back on the merry go round for another round of goal setting.
The question is how can you break free of this “Ground Hog Day” phenomenon, repeating the same outcome year after year not getting any closer to your health and fitness goals?
Break out of the cycle of procrastination by writing your goals
We have found that a powerful way of improving your odds is to keep your goals front and centre.
So instead of writing down your goals on January 1st and closing your journal for the next 365 days, you will get a lot more traction by reminding yourself of your goals daily.
The way this works, is by taking advantage of our Reticular Active System, a part of our brain which works on a sub conscious level to filter in opportunities. By reading your goals daily you will tell your subconscious mind to look for opportunities to realise your goal. This is the same mechanism which makes you spot all the same cars as the one you drive, or see babies everywhere when you have a baby on the way.
But your subconscious mind can also work against you… In a world where we are bombarded with more advertising messages and information stimuli than in the history of mankind, it’s very easy to fall victim to the trance of comfort foods, consumerism, and passive entertainment with dire consequences.
Stand guard at the gates of your mind & reap the benefits
The best way to protect yourself from the pull of low standards and instant gratification is to feed your mind with inspirational messages daily. By substituting mass media and the constant barrage of food advertisements with inspirational stories, quotes, books and images you can provide your subconscious mind with better ideals to strive for.
To help you get started and to provide you with inspiration to fight your epic daily battles we have created some awesome wallpapers for you to download for free.
Be sure to check out our Facebook and Twitter profiles for new updates, and feel free to share these with your friends and relatives to inspire them to reach new heights!
Isn’t it time we tamed our Reticular Active System so that it works for us instead of against us?
