Of course, it is easy to defer judgment to well known authority figures like Dr. Oz, but what about the data to back up these claims? And, what exactly is the science behind these “magical” beans?

In this article we’re going to take a look at green coffee, the claims and the research.

What You Need to Know

Green coffee extract has shown itself to have quite promising effects including:

  • Weight Loss;
  • A Reduction of BMI;
  • Lower Body Fat Percentage;
  • Lower Resting Heart Rate; and
  • Lower Blood Pressure

Looking a little closer we can also see that green coffee is not just effective but safe too, making it a highly appealing and inexpensive means of boosting your weight loss while also providing measurable improvements to various indicators of health.

So lets take a deeper dive into these claims and look into the research behind Green Coffee Bean extract.

First, What is Green Coffee?

Simply put; green coffee is used to describe coffee beans which have not been roasted yet.

There is a naturally occurring chemical in coffee beans known as chlorogenic acid, which has been touted as boasting various health benefits in the areas of diabetes, heart disease, and of course, weight loss.

Roasting coffee beans significantly reduces their levels of chlorogenic acid, so of course we want to keep them in their natural state to reap any potential health benefits they might be able to afford us.

What Does the Research Say?

Take GCA and Lose 5 Pounds?

We will be primarily calling on two recent research papers in this article, the first of which was published in 2011 by Onakpoya et al. in the Journal of Gastroenterology Research and Practice.

This paper was a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials looking at the use and efficacy of green coffee extract as a weight loss supplement.

The results suggest a major reduction in bodyweight from green coffee usage when compared with a placebo; an average reduction of more than 5lbs per subject.

Weight Loss and Improvements in Just Six Weeks?

The next paper we’re going to look at, published by Vinson et al. in the Journal of Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity, is titled “Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, linear dose, crossover study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a green coffee bean extract in overweight subject”.

In this study, 16 overweight subjects were administered either a high dose of 1050mg GCA, a low dose of 700mg GCA, or a placebo.

The body weight, body mass index, body fat percentage, heart rate, blood pressure were measured in all subjects, and all showed improvement during six weeks of GCA use.

This is fantastic news for those who are obese or heavily overweight because, to borrow from the researchers: “The results are consistent with human and animal studies and a meta-analysis of the efficacy of green coffee extract in weight loss. The results suggest that GCA may be an effective nutraceutical in reducing weight in preobese adults, and may be an inexpensive means of preventing obesity in overweight adults.”

Green Coffee Bean Extract Side Effects

Currently, there is no research or medical data reporting any serious side effects with green coffee when taken by mouth. Green coffee does contain caffeine which could impact individuals who already have severe anxiety problems, pregnant or breast feeding, diabetic, or prone to severe gastrointestinal issues like IBS. Always check with your doctor before taking any supplement.

The data coming from these studies looks very promising indeed, with individuals enjoying significant weight loss and clear improvements provided to a variety of health markers.

    Can we take the Green Coffee supplement at any time of the day? Even night time before dinner?

    Also, can we take other supplements together with Green Coffee? Or should there be a gap in-between?

      Preferably earlier in the day in case the caffeine affects your sleep. You can combine other supplements as long as the other supplements don’t use the same ingredients or pathways, for example caffeine in this case.
