When it comes to weight loss supplements, one name which seems to always come up in discussions at the moment is Garcinia Cambogia. And if you are reading this, chances are you have noticed the hype and want to know the facts!

Garcinia’s natural HCA content was first documented as a natural fat burner by Doctors from Georgetown University Medical Center who praised Garcinia Cambogia extract for its ability to help patients reduce their body fat.

But what finally put Garcinia Cambogia on the map was a Dr Oz show featuring Dr Chen, and Dr Oz in which they described it as “‘the Holy Grail of weight loss”.

In our Garcinia Cambogia report, we will be looking at the origins, the research, and most importantly whether a Garcinia supplement is right for you.

What is Garcinia Cambogia Extract?

Garcinia cambogia, also known as Garcinia gummi-gatta or malaban tamarind, is a tropical fruit which is native to Africa and south Asia, in particular Indonesia and India

The fruit looks like a small green pumpkin and is commonly used in traditional asian dishes for its sour flavour.

garcinia cambogia is hca really effective

The active ingredient in Garcinia Cambogia Extract (GCE) is called Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) and is extracted from the rind of the fruit.

How Does Garcinia Cambogia Extract Work?

We have written an in depth article on how Garcinia Cambogia and HCA works, and you can check it out here. In the mean time, here is a summarised version:

Hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the active ingredient in Garcinia Cambogia Extract has been found to have three main weigh loss actions:

  • May help Inhibit an enzyme which is used by the body to store fat from consumed carbohydrates[2].
  • May help suppress cravings by promoting increased serotonin levels (low serotonin levels are associated with emotional eating and depression)[3].
  • May help promote good cholesterol (HDL) whilst helping reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides[4].

How effective is Garcinia Cambogia? We check the clinical studies

Several clinical studies have been undertaken to assess the efficacy of Garcinia Cambogia and specifically the action of Hydroxycitric acid (HCA).

You can read our in depth article covering the Garcinia Cambogia studies here, but for now here is a summary version of the key studies:

In a 4 week trial, 150 obese subjects saw a significant, reduction in body weight, LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides, and an improvement in HDL (good) cholesterol[5]

In an 8 week trial, 40 subjects experienced weight loss compared to the placebo group[6]

In a 12 week trial following a reduced calorie diet, the garcinia group lost nearly 3X times as much weight as the placebo group[7]

In a 4 week trial following a reduced calorie diet, 89 mildly overweight women experienced more weight loss against the placebo group, but noted no noticeable change to their appetite[8]

In an 8 week trial following a low fat diet and at least 1.8L of water consumed a day, 54 overweight subjects lost on average 11.2 lbs[9]

In an 8 week trial following a low fat diet and a moderate exercise program 3 times a week, 60 obese subjects experienced a greater amount of weight loss and reduction in appetite than the placebo group[10]

In a 16 week trial following a low fat diet and a moderate exercise program, all 39 subjects saw a reduction in belly fat and regained none of it after taking a placebo for four weeks after the initial 12 week Garcinia supplementation. [11]
